YouTube · packaging, satisfaction, catalogue

The video has to earn the next video.

A view is the beginning of the relationship. We work on the choice before the click, the experience after it and the connected path that gives a good video somewhere useful to send the viewer next.

01 · The recommendation lenses

Appeal earns the chance. Engagement and satisfaction decide whether the video deserves more of it.

YouTube's own creator guidance talks about appeal, engagement and satisfaction. We use them as the operating frame, add connection, and read each surface separately.

01Before the clickAppealDid the right viewer choose it? Idea, title, thumbnail and topic context promise something worth a click without overselling.Read: impressions · CTR
02After the clickEngagementDid the experience repay the choice? Opening, progression, proof, pacing and resolution decide whether attention survives the promise.Read: watch time · retention curve
03After the videoSatisfactionWas the time well spent? Likes, surveys, return and downstream choices help the system infer value.Read: survey · returning viewers

02 · Four discovery surfaces

The same video can be chosen for four different reasons.

Home, Suggested, Search and Shorts create different entry states. We design the promise and the continuation around the surface instead of treating YouTube as one feed.

Home

Earn a cold choice.

Packaging has to make sense beside many unrelated options. Familiarity, topic interest and a clean promise matter.

Read: impressions · CTR · watch after click · return
Suggested

Continue a viewing state.

The next video has to feel like a useful continuation of the session the viewer is already in.

Read: suggested traffic · next-video path · session depth
Search

Resolve explicit intent.

Title, description and content answer the problem the viewer typed, then earn trust beyond the query.

Read: search terms · watch depth · return
Shorts

Earn a fast continuation.

Short-form tests ideas, creates discovery and feeds the wider system. It still has to deliver one complete useful moment.

Read: viewed vs swiped · completion · long-form continuation
03 · Packaging lab

The thumbnail is not decoration. The title is not metadata.

We test the pair as one promise. The winning package attracts the right viewer and makes the opening easier to satisfy, so the video never has to apologise for the click.

04 · The first minute

The opening has one job: make the click feel correctly spent.

A strong opening clarifies the contract, gives the viewer a reason to trust the speaker and creates progression. It does not spend 45 seconds explaining the channel logo.

0:00–0:20Contract. Name the problem the viewer recognises. Open on the failed flow, not the host intro.
0:20–0:45Proof of progress. Show the first artefact. Methodology moves after the first example.
0:45–1:00First payoff. One thing the viewer can use already. Chapter two becomes the next Short.

05 · Catalogue architecture

A channel should make the next useful choice easier.

Videos are mapped as a connected library. Some attract a new viewer, some deepen the subject, some prove expertise, and some give the audience a reason to return on a schedule.

06 · Shorts and long-form

Short-form and long-form can share a channel when each has a clear job and a useful path.

Shorts

One complete idea, fast.

Discovery, recurring micro-formats, proof moments and topic testing. A Short can point into long-form, but it should never exist only as a trailer.

Long-form

Earn depth and a next path.

Progression, evidence and resolution that repay a larger time commitment, then a connection to another useful video or playlist.

07 · Evidence desk

YouTube has more useful evidence than a view count.

PackagingImpressions · CTR. Did the right viewer choose the promise when it appeared?
